In Switzerland and England respectively, the Young Boys and Manchester City have become champions for the fifth time in the past six years. But the German champions and the relegated, promoted and European places in all three leagues are yet to be decided. The Bundesliga ends on Saturday, the Premier League on Sunday and the Super League on Monday. To help you keep up with this jumble of numbers, we’ve put together what to look out for.
In the 1st Bundesliga, all matches start at the same time on Saturday at 3.30 pm. Neither the title fight nor the relegation, promotion and European Cup places are set yet. The weekend promises excitement and the best entertainment. It’s all about this:
In Germany there are signs of sensation: FC Bayern could be dethroned by BVB after 10 championship titles in a row. BVB is two points ahead of Bayern, but has the worst goal difference. That means if BVB draws and Bayern wins, FC Bayern would be champions. If FC Bayern doesn’t win, BVB is automatically champion. The same goes for a BVB win.
Like BVB and FC Bayern, Leipzig is firmly in the Champions League. They are firmly in third place four points ahead of Union Berlin and five points behind FC Bayern. Union Berlin and SC Freiburg battle for fourth place in a long-range duel. Union has a small advantage. They have a slightly better goal difference than SC Freiburg and are easier opponents in Werder Bremen. Freiburg has to compete against Eintracht Frankfurt, which is still fighting for a place in the European Cup.
The loser of the Union-Freiburg long-distance duel is fifth. Bayer Leverkusen, VFL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt battle for sixth and seventh place. Also important is the DFB Cup final, in which Eintracht plays against Leipzig. Should Frankfurt win, only the sixth in the league will qualify for an international competition. Frankfurt would then qualify directly for the Europa League regardless of where they finish in the competition. With a win in Leipzig, the spot in the Europa League would go to the league. The sixth would then qualify directly for the EL and the seventh would get the Conference League spot.
Hertha BSC are in last place and have already been relegated. Schalke 04 are currently second in the direct relegation zone, but if Schalke wins against Leipzig they can overtake Bochum and Stuttgart, who play against Leverkusen and Hoffenheim respectively. Theoretically, Augsburg could also be relegated directly, while Schalke can only mathematically overtake Augsburg, which has a goal difference that is 15 goals better. If Bochum and Stuttgart won and Augsburg lost, they would slip into the relegation zone.
SV Darmstadt has already been promoted to the 1st Bundesliga. Heidenheim and HSV share the joint second and third place. Heidenheim is currently in second place with one point more, which entitles them to direct promotion. Heidenheim has to play the penultimate Regensburg and HSV will duel with the already relegated SV Sandhausen.
2. Bundesliga (Sunday 28 May, 3.30 pm)
SSV Jahn Regensburg – 1 FC Heidenheim
SV Sandhausen – Burger SV
Unlike the Bundesliga, most things have already been decided in the English Premier League. Only the race for the Conference League and the relegation battle are still open.
are qualified Manchester City as master, arsenal also as runners-up Manchester United And Newcastle Unitedstill fighting for third place, but both qualified for the top international competition.
Closes in fifth place Liverpool ended a disappointing season by their standards. On the other hand, people celebrate indoors Brighton the first participation in a European competition in the club’s history. They finish the season in sixth place. Both can no longer be moved.
Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and FC Brentford battle for seventh place. The clubs have 58, 57 and 56 points. Aston Villa plays Brighton, Tottenham plays Leeds United and Brentford plays Manchester City.
In the Premier League, only one of the three relegated teams is known so far. Southampton say goodbye to the English second division after eleven years. Only Everton, Leicester and Leeds can be relegated. Everton FC has the best chance of staying upright with 33 points, two points more than the competition. Everton also has the easiest opponent on paper with AFC Bournemouth. Leicester City have the best goal difference of the three teams and with West Ham United a team that is probably already thinking about the upcoming Conference League final against Fiorentina. Leeds must face Tottenham, who are still playing for an international spot.
The season in the Championship is already over. Burnley and Sheffield United are back in the Premier League after one and two years respectively. The third climber will be determined on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. Coventry City and Luton Town meet in the play-off final.
Promotion Playoff Final (Saturday, May 27, 5:45 PM)
Coventry City-Luton Town
After these fireworks, it will continue in Switzerland on Whit Monday. Just like in England, the champion is already certain. But not everything is decided yet.
As champion, YB enters the third round of the Champions League qualification. Servette and Lugano are still fighting for second place. Servette is one point ahead, but has the worst goal difference. Servette plays against FC Luzern, that is no longer about anything in the competition. Lugano plays against FC Zürich, which can still hope for an international place. Second place qualifies you for the second round of CL qualifiers.
Lugano or Servette will end up in the play-off round of the Europa League, as only the third-placed team qualifies for the Europa League.
A total of two teams qualify for the second round of the Conference League Qualifiers. Luzern is fourth and thus qualified. FCZ, GC, Basel and FC St. Gallen are still fighting for fifth place. GC, Basel and FCZ are all tied on 44 points, St. Gallen have 42 points but by far the best goal difference of the four clubs. Basel and GC compete in a direct duel in Joggeli. Since both have a significantly better goal difference than FCZ, the winner of the game qualifies for the Conference League qualifier regardless of FCZ’s result. If GC and Basel play a draw, FCZ can catch up with a profit. If FCZ doesn’t win either, St. Gallen could rise from eighth to fifth place with a win. St. Gallen plays against the last Sion, FCZ against Lugano.
Due to the expansion of the Super League, no club will be directly relegated this year. The bottom of the league play third in the Challenge League in a relegation game. FC Sion and FC Winterthur compete against each other in a long-distance duel. FC Sion is currently one point behind FC Winterthur. Sion plays against St. Gallen, Winterthur against YB.
Only Yverdon has risen directly so far. Lausanne is second and must score at least one point against FC Aarau to be sure of a straight line. Lausanne-Ouchy are currently third and could move up to second with a big win over Bellinzona in a defeat in Lausanne. Aarau and Wil are still lurking behind Lausanne-Ouchy, who will play against Lausanne and Yverdon respectively. If Lausanne-Ouchy loses a point, one of the two clubs can still move up to third place.
