Car crashes into barrier at British government headquarters Car crashes into barrier at British government headquarters

A car crashed into the heavy Downing Street barrier at the British government seat in London on Thursday. A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and property damage, police said. No one was injured. According to a BBC report, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was at his office at number 10 at the time of the incident at 4:20 pm (5:20 pm CEST). He then left the premises on a scheduled date.

Like all British prime ministers, Sunak and his family share a flat in Downing Street. The background to the incident was initially unclear. Footage showed a silver car crossing Whitehall’s main road, which runs through the Government Quarter. The car appeared to brake at the entrance to Downing Street, but then continued on.

Downing Street has long been closed to vehicles. The barrier has grown stronger over the years. A large black metal gate has blocked access since 1989 – also because of the risk of attacks related to the then civil war in Northern Ireland. (sda/dpa)
