20 years on the run: main suspect of Rwandan genocide in South Africa caught with rape and “blind shooting” – German soldier reports to Lanz from Ukraine

A Rwandan national suspected of committing crimes against humanity during his country’s 1994 genocide has been arrested in South Africa, according to the United Nations.

Fulgence Kayishema was arrested on Wednesday in the small town of Paarl near the tourist metropolis of Cape Town, the UN War Crimes Tribunal Mechanism (IRMCT) announced on Thursday. He has been on the run since 2001 and is therefore considered one of the world’s most wanted perpetrators suspected of genocide.

The man is accused of orchestrating the murder of about 2,000 Tutsis who had taken refuge in a Catholic church during the genocide. Children were also among the victims, it said.

The International Mechanism handles, among other things, the latest cases of the UN tribunal on Rwanda. The trials of the genocide are mostly heard in Arusha, Tanzania. The tribunal indicted Kayishema in 2001 for genocide, complicity in genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide and crimes against humanity.

In 1994, Hutu-majority militias killed members of Rwanda’s Tutsi minority in East Africa in just about 100 days. At least 800,000 people were killed. Hundreds of thousands have been victims of sexual violence. (oee/sda/dpa)
