Danish IS fighter sentenced to life Gas prices in Europe have fallen to the lowest level in almost two years

A man in Denmark has been sentenced to life in prison for fighting for the Islamic State (IS) terror militia in Syria.

The 32-year-old Danish citizen was sentenced to the highest possible sentence by a court in Copenhagen on Thursday for serious treason. His lawyer immediately announced an appeal, the Ritzau news agency reported. The court in Copenhagen had already found the man guilty at the beginning of May, but had not yet imposed a sentence. On average, life sentences in Denmark are released after 16 to 17 years.

The 32-year-old traveled via Turkey to Syria in 2013, where he joined IS. He initially fought for the same IS subgroup as his uncle, who was the first Syrian fighter in Denmark to be sentenced to 14 years in prison for treason last fall. His now-convicted nephew has been confined to a wheelchair since a bomb attack in 2017. After the attack, he was smuggled to Turkey with his wife and two children, where he was sentenced to four years and two months in prison in 2018. He was extradited to Denmark at the end of 2019.
