The drone flies towards the Kremlin, crashes into a flagpole and catches fire. The video went viral at the beginning of May – now it should be clear who is behind the attack on the seat of Vladimir Putin (70): Ukraine. At least that is what the US Secret Service assumes, as the “New York Times” reports.
US officials have overheard conversations between Ukrainian officials who blame each other for a drone attack on the Kremlin. This adds to the US assessment that a Ukrainian group may have been responsible, sources familiar with the information told CNN.
It is not the first time the US has seen Ukrainian officials pointing fingers at each other after a mysterious attack on Russian targets. The same happened with the car bombing that killed 29-year-old Darya Dugina, and the alleged truck bombings of the Kerch Bridge, which connects mainland Russia to Crimea, the sources said.
The US officials emphasize that they cannot say for sure who is behind it. They continue to believe it is unlikely that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, 45, himself ordered the attack or knew about it in advance.
Zelensky clearly denied responsibility for the attack in early May: “We did not attack Putin.” Nevertheless, there are several indications that Ukraine may be behind it.
Because the United States also has information that Ukraine has previously considered attacking Russia. Pentagon documents leaked online earlier this year revealed: The CIA has urged the head of Ukrainian military intelligence to “postpone” attacks on Russia on the anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine.
And: in recent weeks, Ukrainian – or Ukraine-related – units have become increasingly independent and have attacked Russia. This week, Russian neo-Nazis made headlines for launching attacks in the Russian border region of Belgorod, armed with Western weapons and wearing Ukrainian military garb, instilling fear and terror.
It is almost as if Ukraine has lost control of its men. That could become a problem for Kiev. The Western Allies have repeatedly advised against fighting on Russian soil – certainly not with Western weapons. Even if no consequences have been announced from the West, such actions could cause Ukraine to lose its support in the long run.
In addition, Russia can use the repeated attacks on their country and on the heart of Moscow as a reason to intensify their attacks on Ukraine. The Kremlin already announced this after the drone attack. On the night of Thursday, air raid sirens went off throughout Ukraine – most of the explosions took place in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
