US Democrats want to force vote in debt dispute Modern slavery up sharply according to report – Switzerland ranked 160

In the US debt dispute, President Joe Biden’s Democrats want to force a vote in the House of Representatives.

The signatures of all group members for such a project have been collected, MP Katherine Clark, who is part of the Democrats’ leadership team in the House of Representatives, said Wednesday afternoon (local time).

The aim has little chance of success. The Democrats do not have a majority in the House of Representatives. You also need five Republican signatures.

With the petition, the Democrats want to force a vote on their bill to raise the debt ceiling, bypassing Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Collecting signatures is a procedural move. It is currently considered unlikely that there will be enough Republicans to support the project with their signatures.

Republicans and Democrats have been fighting bitterly for weeks over raising the debt ceiling in difficult rounds of negotiations. The Republicans want to force the Democrats to cut social sector spending.

The U.S. government is at risk of default from early June, according to Treasury Department forecasts. If it really came to that, it could lead to a global financial crisis. A state bankruptcy threatens because in the United States parliament determines how much money the state can borrow.

“Republicans in the House of Representatives are determined to either make deep, painful cuts that harm the health, safety or well-being of ordinary Americans or crash the economy,” said House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries. .

Republican negotiator McCarthy said it was possible to find a way, according to CNN. However, his party will not back down from certain demands. (sda/dpa)
