After Britain’s “Storm Shadow”: Is Germany Now Sending Long-Range Missiles to Kiev?

Experts demand that Germany supply these Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.

In mid-May, Britain delivered the Storm Shadow long-range missiles to Ukraine for the first time. A great asset to Kiev. The military can now accurately attack targets up to 400 kilometers away.

However, according to experts, a few Storm Shadow missiles are not enough for long-term defense. “A few Storm Shadows won’t make a difference on the battlefield,” Fabian Hoffmann, a missile expert at the University of Oslo, told the editorial network Germany.

Cruise missiles fly under enemy radar

The call for more deliveries is getting louder. The German CDU defense politician Roderich Kiesewetter sees Germany as a duty. “Ukraine’s partners must now go all in and provide Ukraine with everything permitted under international law.” Taurus cruise missiles with a range of up to 400 to 500 kilometers are a very useful contribution from Germany.

The German Bundeswehr currently has 150 of these missiles. This allows targets far behind the front line to be attacked.

The special thing: the launched rocket flies only 50 meters above the ground. Therefore, it is very difficult for opponents to see him. This circumstance gives the attacking side a decisive advantage.

“Russia seems unable to intercept these weapons”

Missile expert Hoffmann explains: “Russia is unlikely to be able to intercept these cruise missiles at the moment. They have a shortage of low-flying objects.”

The Kremlin knows that too, the expert continues. Russian fuel depots and command stations are being moved further and further inland for fear of attack.

Ukrainian fighter jets not ready yet

It is not yet known whether Berlin will actually deliver the Taurus cruise missiles. The problem: the Ukrainian fighter jets are not compatible with the Taurus missiles. As with the Storm Shadow missiles, they would still need to be modified. Expert Hoffmann thinks the Taurus cruise missiles could be operational in a month or two.
