UN High Commissioner warns: Human rights of migrants are increasingly under threat

Migrants’ rights are increasingly ignored, warns UN High Commissioner Volker Türk. He emphasizes the importance of solidarity.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk (58), the rights of migrants are increasingly being violated. Developments in the US, Great Britain, Italy and Greece in particular are of great concern, Türk said in Geneva on Wednesday.

Laws would be made with the aim of pushing back those seeking protection in an “illegal, undignified and intolerable manner”. “We need solidarity to ensure that all vulnerable people are treated with humanity and respect,” Türk said. The UN High Commissioner recalled that human rights violations are not concentrated in just a few states. Each state can do even better in this area.

Will the budget be doubled?

The situation is currently particularly bad in Sudan, where conditions are hard to describe, says Türk. “It is heartbreaking what is happening in Sudan.” A long-simmering power struggle has escalated in the country in Northeast Africa, bringing great misery to the people.

According to Türk, one of the bright spots is the improvement of human rights in Zambia and Sierra Leone: both countries have now abolished the death penalty. In general, the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights is underfunded and understaffed given the multitude of problems. Ideally, the budget should be doubled to $800 million, Turk said.
