New law in verbal exchange between Hungary and Ukraine. Last week it was announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) was considering blowing up a Hungarian pipeline. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto (44) fired a shot at Kiev and strongly condemned “hostile and threatening measures against Hungary”.
Now the foreign minister has received verbal support from his prime minister Viktor Orban (59), who stubbornly speaks of a “Russian-Ukrainian war” that is “not ours”.
Orban finds it difficult to clearly condemn Russia as an aggressor. Now Orban put one on top. It is impossible for Ukraine to win the war, said the head of government of the EU member state – the confederation of states that supports Ukraine militarily, politically, financially and humanitarianly with billions in aid.
After all, Orban for the first time showed something like sympathy for the fate of its eastern neighbour, with which Hungary shares a 140-kilometer-long border at the extreme northeastern tip. “With feeling it is tragic, our hearts are all with the Ukrainians,” Orban said at a Bloomberg-sponsored event in Qatar. “But I speak as a politician who has to save lives. There is no chance of winning this war.” Implicitly saying that the Russians can only leave the battlefield as losers. More military aid, Orban said, would only lead to more deaths.
Orban’s Hungary continues to maintain close ties with Moscow. Orban has repeatedly opposed sanctions, claiming they were a heavy burden on his own people. According to Orban, sanctions would not hasten the end of the war.
Ukraine categorically rejected Orban’s statement. Oleg Nikolenko (36), spokesman for the Kiev foreign ministry, reminded the Hungarian that before the war broke out, some European politicians had claimed that Ukraine had no chance of holding out for more than 72 hours. “They were wrong then, and they are wrong now,” Nikolenko said. “Unlike those who favor surrender without resistance to the enemy, the Ukrainians will continue to fight until their territory is completely liberated from Russian occupation.” (kes)
