He just wanted to help and paid with his death. A family man in the US was hit by a car and fatally injured after helping a family of ducks cross the street. The tragic incident occurred in the town of Rocklin, California just after 8 p.m. on Thursday.
William Wimsatt (12) was also on his way at that time. He and his mother witnessed the animal-loving action. The 12-year-old took out his mobile phone and snapped a picture. What he didn’t know at the time was that this would be the last photo of the duck rescuer alive. “He got out of the car and chased the ducks away, and everyone applauded because he was so nice,” Wimsatt told American broadcaster KCRA 3.
After the ducks made it safely across the street, the other motorists and pedestrians applauded. “My mom rolled down the window and said, ‘Well done, well done’.”
Then it happened: when the man wanted to go back to his car and his children, he was hit by a car. The man’s children had to watch as the duck rescuer flew through the air and lay motionless in the street. “My mother ran out and comforted the man’s children.”
The fatal driver was a 17-year-old, according to police. “She is working with us and there is no evidence that she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It is probably a very tragic accident,” said a police spokesman after the drama. Residents have a temporary shelter at the scene of the accident. monument erected for the duck rescuers – with flowers, letters of thanks and small rubber ducks.(jmh)
