A mystical master room, a rum bottle with 60 percent alcohol and a dusty ice machine: archaeologists have discovered a real archaeological gem in Dortmund, Germany!
In a closed underground bunker, the team found a restaurant from 1948, the newspaper “Bild” reported on Tuesday.
The photos of the controversial find bear witness to a bygone era: the former shelter could accommodate 390 people. The original tables and coat racks can still be found on the 250 square meters.
In addition to numerous bottles and rusty kitchen inventory, there is also a menu in the room. The prices in it are still easy to read: guests could order a pineapple sorbet for 40 centimes or a chocolate cup for 60 centimetres.
“You jump into a different time. In fact, there have even been two times: during the war it was a place where people sought shelter. After that, people sat here together and had fun,” explains city archaeologist Ingmar Luther of “Bild”.
But why was a shelter used as a pub in the first place? In the bombed-out city of Dortmund, space for catering was scarce in the post-war period. That is why the bunker was repurposed.
1971 was the end of the culinary arts. According to documents, the room was later used by a photographer to develop his films before the bunker was closed in 1981 when unknown persons set it on fire.
The fire had no far-reaching consequences: despite its long existence, the bunker is in very good condition. To maintain this, the space was closed again with heavy concrete slabs after inspection by the archaeologists. (A)
