On the flight back to Russia, Pyotr Kucherenko did not feel well. He was dead shortly afterwards. The circumstances are mysterious.

Suddenly he didn’t feel well anymore, then everything went very fast. Russian State Secretary Pyotr Kutscherenko († 46) collapsed on May 20 on the return flight from a business trip. Doctors could not do more for the Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation after landing. The ministry does not list the exact cause of death on its website. We are talking about a sudden illness.

Kucherenko has been a deputy minister since March 2020. He oversaw personnel issues and the ministry’s economic activities. His wife is the well-known singer Diana Gurzkaia (44) in Russia. Before joining the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Kucherenko worked for eight years as the head of the Constitutional Law Committee of the Federation Council.

His sudden death joins a string of mysterious deaths in Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine. Specifically, it involves a long list of unsolved deaths or deaths whose cause of death is extremely controversial – mostly among the Russian elite.

Several managers found dead

Most recently, the death of energy manager Igor Schkurko († 49) in early April caused a stir. He was found dead in his prison cell in Siberia. Shkurko, who served as deputy general manager of Russian energy company Yakutskenergo, was charged with taking $6,200 in bribes. According to Russian media, the manager would have objected to the bribery allegations before his death. A day later he was dead.

Before that, the death of oligarch Sergei Grishin († 56) made headlines. Officially, he suffered from a circulatory disorder in the brain, which led to blood poisoning – but critics have their doubts. Not without reason: Grishin was a critic of Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin (70). Shortly before his death, he had publicly attacked the regime.

Several other managers of Russian energy companies have been found dead since the beginning of this year. They would all have committed suicide. Gazprombank’s longtime deputy head Igor Volobuyev (51) doubts such “suicides” – in the middle of last year he spoke of targeted crimes when the same thing happened. Volobuyev has switched sides and says he will now fight in Ukraine. (jmh)
