The fruit crop in the Adriatic region could be severely affected by the severe storms in the next four to five years, the agricultural association Coldiretti announced on Sunday. The water left in the orchards “suffocated” the roots of the plants, causing them to rot.

Entire plantations would have to be planted out and then replanted, it said. Accordingly, a huge mass of plants had to be uprooted. According to Coldiretti, this will have a huge impact on fruit prices. Emilia-Romagna is considered the fruit region of Italy – apricots, nectarines, plums, apples, pears, kiwis and strawberries are grown there. The production of at least 400 million kilos of wheat is now in danger. Entire areas where corn, sunflowers or soybeans are grown are covered with a thick layer of mud.

Livestock farming in the region has also been hit hard. According to Coldiretti, some 250,000 cattle, pigs and sheep still need to be saved. Not only the floods themselves, which had already led to the death of thousands of animals, but landslides in particular make the situation more difficult. Many farms are inaccessible due to winding roads. The animals there needed food and water.

A lot of rain has fallen in Emilia-Romagna in recent days. Dramatic flooding and landslides resulted. The region is suffering serious damage. The regional government assumes billions in damage. At least 14 people were killed and thousands had to be evacuated.
