American drummer Josh Freese (50) takes over the drumming place from Hawkins, the band around frontman Dave Grohl (54) announced on Sunday (local time) during a livestream event. Freese has previously played with artists and bands such as The Vandals, Devo, Danny Elfman, Nine Inch Nails, Sting and The Offspring, among others.
For June 2, the band has announced a new album, “But Here We Are” – the first since the death of Hawkins, who was found dead in a hotel room in the Colombian capital Bogotá during a tour last March.
The Foo Fighters are going on tour next week. At the beginning of June they are expected to be one of the headliners at “Rock im Park” in Nuremberg and at the twin festival “Rock am Ring” at the Nürburgring in the Eifel.
At two memorial concerts last September, Hawkins’ chair was taken by several musicians, including Freese, Travis Barker of Blink-182, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Hawkins’ son Shane. (sda/dpa)
