He Italian volcano Etna, the most active in Europe, this Sunday registered a a new eruption which spewed an ash cloud over the city on the edge of Catania, causing traffic at the airport to be suspended for security reasons.
“Due to the eruptive activity of Etna and profuse fall of volcanic ash on the airport’s pavement, flights are suspended until safety conditions are restored,” the airport manager said in a statement.
Etna is undergoing one of its frequent eruptions that usually cover the Sicilian towns around it with ash.
The latter can only be controlled with the help of technology, since the crater of the volcano, about 3,300 meters high, has remained covered by clouds, due to the storm that is currently raging on the island of Sicily.
He National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) confirmed this new eruption, the rumbling of which is heard in the towns of Adrano and Biancavilla, on its south-western slope, precisely in the direction predicted in the dispersion of the clouds.
Earthquakes recorded a “high level” as early as 7:20 a.m. local time (5:20 a.m. GMT), and the eruption included ash rain in Catania.
