The northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna is still not recovering from the sometimes dramatic flooding caused by heavy rainfall. Everything is not yet safe, in some parts of the region on the Adriatic coast the highest red warning still applies, Italian civil protection announced late Friday evening.
Rain is expected for the weekend. This week, at least 14 people were killed by the floods and about 15,000 people had to be evacuated, Ansa news agency reported.
The floods and the many landslides continue to cause problems in the affected areas. In some areas, the water is slowly receding – hundreds of rescuers and volunteers are now clearing the streets of mud.
Since the start of the violent storm, Italy’s fire service has been deployed on more than 3,000 missions involving about 1,000 firefighters, it said Saturday morning. Most missions were therefore in the areas around Bologna, Ravenna and Forlì-Cesena.
There is now great concern again for the new rain that is expected over the weekend. On Friday, the situation escalated again, especially in the provinces around the city of Ravenna. Rivers overflowed their banks again. Landslides in particular, which affect the areas, are currently proving to be a major threat. Several communities also faced problems with food and drinking water supplies.
The Italian government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is planning a cabinet meeting on Tuesday to decide on support measures for the affected areas. From Japan, where Meloni is participating in the G7 summit, she assured her “full solidarity”. (SDA/jmh)
