Aric Hutchinson (36) cannot remember the accident itself, but he does remember the last thing his wife, Samantha “Sam” Hutchinson († 34), said to him before the horror accident. “She never wanted this night to end,” the widower said Friday on ABC’s Good Morning America.
On April 28, the day Samantha Hutchinson died, the couple celebrated their wedding party with family and friends near the beach in Folly Beach, South Carolina. At 10 p.m., they both waved cheerily to their guests and turned onto a small coastal road in a specially prepared golf cart. It would be the honeymoon.
However, according to the police report, they were hit by a gray Toyota a few seconds later. At the wheel: Jamie K.* (25). Completely drunk and driving way too fast. She raced through the 30 zone at 125 km/h. The impact was violent. The golf cart rolled over eight times.
Samantha Hutchinson died instantly, her husband surviving only by being thrown from the golf cart. He was taken to intensive care with serious injuries.
When he woke up in the hospital, the first thing he asked was “Where’s Sam?”. His mother had to explain to him that Samantha had died in the accident. A shock for Aric Hutchinson.
“I’m still trying to figure it out. We were all so happy that night and suddenly it became the worst night of our lives.” His wife had a special appearance. ‘She had a charisma. When she entered the room, you could really see it.”
Instead of planning their lives together, Hutchinson must now arrange his wife’s funeral. At the same time, he is suing death driver Jamie K. for wrongful death. K.’s employer and supervisor are also named in the lawsuit and are accused of “pressuring” her to attend an event and consuming “excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages” the night of the accident.
The bars and restaurants Jamie K. frequented prior to the accident are also mentioned in the lawsuit. “While Jamie K. was noticeably and visibly intoxicated at each of these establishments,” the lawsuit states, “alcohol was still being served, made available, and/or allowed to continue to be consumed in each of these establishments. “
A lawyer for K. issued a statement after their arrest: “We cannot imagine what the families are going through and extend our deepest sympathy to them. All we ask is that you do not make any hasty judgments.”
Aric Hutchinson’s mother launched a fundraiser on the GoFundMe site after the horrific accident. “I got Aric’s wedding ring in a plastic bag at the hospital five hours after Sam put it on his finger and they read each other their vows. Aric has lost the love of his life,” she wrote.
The money raised can be used to pay for the funeral and hospital. What remains should be a support for her son during this difficult time. Her goal was $100,000. This limit has long been crossed. More than $700,000 has now been raised. (jmh)
