This was announced by the police on Friday. The fire broke out 220 kilometers west of the capital Madrid on Wednesday, probably by arson, and has already destroyed some 7,500 hectares of forest.
Fanned by strong winds, the flames moved towards the Sierra de Gata mountain range on Friday, the highest peaks of which are almost 1500 meters high. Eight firefighting aircraft, six helicopters and several hundred firefighters are in action, the police said. Heavy equipment was used to cut aisles into the vegetation to stop the fire.
Prolonged drought and rising temperatures have greatly increased the risk of wildfires. Since the beginning of the year in May, nearly 63,000 hectares of forest and undergrowth have been destroyed by a total of 320 fires in Spain, according to estimates by the European forest fire information system EFFIS. The actual wildfire season is yet to come in the months of July to September. Experts assume that climate change makes heat waves more likely. In addition, the severity and likelihood of droughts have almost certainly increased in the Mediterranean region.
