Russia has been at war with Ukraine for 15 months. The Russian troops have not achieved much so far. On the contrary: Ukraine is preparing a counter-offensive that could be decisive for the war.
In addition, Russia is currently being rocked by acts of sabotage and a drone attack on the Kremlin. And in the Kremlin there is resistance against Russian President Vladimir Putin (70). For example with Lyudmila Narusova (72), a confidante of Putin.
The widow of Putin’s former mentor Anatoly Sobchak (1937-2000) is frustrated and wants the war to end. “No one has explained what a win should look like,” Narusova said in a video interview with Forbes Russia. “When we think of the originally stated goals of ‘denazification’ and ‘demilitarization,’ the entire Ukrainian military should have been destroyed long ago.” Narusova pointed out that the Russian soldiers would now fight NATO-armed Ukrainian troops. “Does this mean we are demilitarizing NATO?” she asked. “This goal is unattainable.”
Narusova was elected to the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, in 1995 and has been a member of the Russian Federation Council for decades. Only a few days after the outbreak of war, she first expressed her skepticism, stating that “she did not identify with the state representatives who spoke out in favor of the war”.
In March 2022, she spoke before the Council of the Russian Federation about Russia’s heavy losses. Nasurova’s statements sent a signal: the Russian public’s perception of the war has changed.
The Russian president has now tied his fate closely to the success of the invasion. Former CIA counterintelligence chief James Olson is convinced that a military defeat in Ukraine could mean the death of the despot.
Narusova’s vocal criticism may indicate that fears of a Ukraine counter-offensive are growing among the Russian elite. After all, a military defeat could unleash unprecedented chaos in the Kremlin.
