Wagner deserter Andrei Medvedev (26) doesn’t like it anymore: he wants to go back to Russia, away from the safe Norway, where he is now. “I had hoped to find peace and quiet here, to leave all politics, the war and the military behind me, but somehow I didn’t make it,” said Medvedev.

He has already contacted the Russian embassy in Oslo, Medvedev said, according to Ukrainian media. He will soon submit his documents for a return to Russia. Apparently he is not afraid for his life. “We will see what will happen in Russia. If they kill me, fine. If you don’t, thank you very much. If I survive, thank you even more.”

He feels like a kid in a big game

Medvedev was a commander in Russia’s infamous Wagner mercenary army until he deserted and fled to Norway last November. He allegedly commanded the unit that included Yevgeny Nushin, a Wagner mercenary whose execution with a sledgehammer was filmed online.

He announced his decision in five videos, which were later deleted. In it, he said he felt like a kid in a big game he no longer wanted to be in.

Convicted of fighting in April

As late as April, Medvedev said he was learning Norwegian and hoped to get asylum soon. Medvedev claims he deserted because he witnessed the murder and brutal treatment of Russian prisoners recruited as cannon fodder by the Wagner group.

In April, he was sentenced to 14 days’ probation for involvement in a brawl. (new)
