Attack on US consulate convoy in Nigeria: number of victims rises to seven

After an armed attack on a convoy of employees of the US consulate in the Nigerian state of Anambra, the death toll rose to seven, according to the police on Thursday. Two people are still missing. It was initially unclear whether other consulate employees were among the dead. On Wednesday, police confirmed that two consulate employees and two other people were killed. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that five consular employees and four Nigerian police officers were in the convoy. There were no US citizens in the convoy.

These types of raids are not uncommon in southeastern Africa’s most populous country. Targets are usually business people or politicians who travel in convoys due to the security situation. Unlike in other Nigerian states, violence in Anambra is usually not about kidnapping for ransom. Attacks have more recently focused on killing high-ranking figures in politics and business.
