At least 14 convicts were executed in one day in Iran, according to activists. The executions took place in several prisons in Iran, Norway-based human rights organization Hengaw reported Thursday. The death penalty was imposed for murder, among other things. The Iranian judiciary initially gave no information about the cases.
Human rights activists have for years criticized Iran’s use of the death penalty. There are no official figures on the executions. More than 200 people have already been executed in Iran this year, according to information from the UN. Human rights activists are particularly critical of the high proportion of ethnic minorities. According to Amnesty International, the number of recorded executions in Iran has risen from 314 in 2021 to 576 in 2022. (aeg/sda/dpa)
