After the deadly fire in a hostel in the New Zealand capital Wellington, the police have arrested a suspect. The man was arrested on Thursday afternoon (local time), Radio New Zealand reports with reference to the security forces. He is suspected of arson. However, the charges can be expanded in connection with the victims of the fire.
The fire at Loafers Lodge in the Newtown neighborhood broke out late Monday evening. On Tuesday, authorities had spoken of at least six dead and eleven missing. The exact number of dead is still unclear. Emergency services have now recovered two bodies from the building, which was completely destroyed inside, it was said on Thursday.
On Wednesday, police began searching the hostel for missing persons and recovering the victims who had already been located. Tracks also need to be secured. Police Chief Dion Bennett said no other suspects are currently being sought. (SDA)
