Due to the sometimes dramatic flooding, the highest red alert level still applies in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. According to official figures, at least nine people have died in the area on the Adriatic coast. Evacuations continued early Thursday morning. An order for immediate evacuation has been issued in the province of Ravenna due to the high risk of flooding. Hardly any rain showers are expected, but Italian civil protection is still calling for great caution.
The provinces of Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini have been hardest hit, especially the cities of Faenza, Cesena and Forlì. There are also reports of missing persons. Authorities said 23 rivers in the region overflowed their banks on Wednesday. 41 communities were affected by the floods. Authorities also recorded 280 landslides and 400 blocked roads. The fire department has deployed some 2,000 missions in the past 48 hours, with more than 900 emergency services and 300 vehicles on the scene, it was said Thursday morning.
Thousands of people have already been evacuated due to the rain. Regional president Stefano Bonaccini spoke of “incredible numbers and a large number of evacuees”. Civil protection reported about 50,000 people without power on Wednesday and 100,000 people without a mobile network.
Photos and videos from the region show entire cities still under water and streets full of mud. The vast fields in the area between Forlì and Rimini have also been badly affected. (SDA)
