Peace Network Demands G7 Nuclear Disarmament

The Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) calls for concrete steps towards nuclear disarmament of the G7 countries.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is demanding concrete steps towards nuclear disarmament from the G7 summit in Hiroshima. “It would be an insult to the survivors of the Hiroshima attack if they came here and met the hibakusha, the survivors of nuclear weapons, without committing to concrete disarmament,” ICAN director Daniel Högsta told the Hiroshima news agency on Thursday. .

“And it would also be an unacceptable failure of leadership,” the Nobel Prize-winning organization’s representative added. The meeting of the G7 heads of state and government takes place “in a dangerous global situation”, given Russia’s threat of nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine.

20 American nuclear bombs in Germany

The G7 countries should respond to this at their summit and show “leadership”. “You must commit to a plan for comprehensive nuclear disarmament negotiations, including the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons,” the ICAN director demanded. Like all nine nuclear-weapon states, North Korea is also modernizing its arsenals. The G7 must “deal with North Korea diplomatically and commit to nuclear disarmament so that they can put pressure on North Korea”. The three-day summit in Hiroshima begins on Friday.

The non-governmental organization Peace Boat, ICAN’s Japanese partner, called on the G7 host Japan to follow Germany’s lead and participate as an observer in the Nuclear Weapon Prohibition Treaty (TPNW) member state meeting. Germany is not a contracting party. “But it recognizes the significance and importance of the treaty and has expressed its willingness to cooperate with states parties,” said Akira Kawasaki.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force in 2021, fundamentally bans nuclear bombs. However, none of the known nuclear-weapon countries are included, nor is Germany. Germany itself has no nuclear weapons. However, according to expert estimates, up to 20 US nuclear bombs are stationed at Büchel Air Force Base in Rhineland-Palatinate, which will be used by Bundeswehr fighter jets in an emergency. This is part of NATO’s nuclear deterrent. (SDA)
