Mexican woman kills her rapist – jail time

A shirt and her resistance probably saved the life of Mexican Roxana Ruiz at the age of 21. The 22-year-old assaulted her, raped her and threatened to kill her. She fought back and strangled him with the shirt.

The indigenous woman has now been sentenced by a judge to six years and two months in prison. She acted in self-defense, but used excessive force to justify the sentence.

“I just wanted to save my life”

Ruiz had previously met the man at a bar. That evening he offered to accompany her home and asked if he could stay with her as it was too long to go home. She let him stay with her on a mattress on the floor. In the night he finally attacked her.

Roxana Ruiz tearfully gave an interview to the “Emeequis” portal in front of the detention center and remembers the night: “I fought back, he fell to the floor, I could put my shirt around his neck.” She says. “I just wanted to save my life from a rapist.”

You didn’t plan any of this. “At that moment my life was in danger. It was my life or his life.” She didn’t use a gun, just the shirt. Then she panicked and tried to dismember the body. She believes she wouldn’t have been the only victim if he had survived.

Roxana’s defense will appeal the verdict next week, saying it is “arbitrary.” The young woman was not given a fair trial. Her lawyer says no gynecological tests were performed and she was imprisoned for nine months because she was not believed.

In addition to the six-year prison sentence, she must pay a fine of nearly 300,000 pesos (about 15,000 francs) for the murder of the deceased’s family. (new)
