Man is suing his employer for a pay raise

An IT specialist has taken his employer to court.

Briton Ian Clifford has sued his employer, the tech group IBM. The IT specialist from Guildford, southwest London, is demanding a raise – even though he’s been out of work for 15 years.

Clifford has been incapacitated for work since 2008 due to an unspecified illness. Nevertheless, IBM continued to pay him wages, the Telegraph reports. While Clifford’s colleagues received pay raises, his salary remained the same. That is why he first complained in 2013.

IBM then agreed with him that despite his illness he would continue to receive 75 percent of his salary – for 30 years or until retirement. Clifford should receive the equivalent of 60,000 francs a year in his account without having to work for it – a total of nearly 1.8 million francs until his retirement.

Court brushes off Clifford

However, in February 2022, Clifford filed another complaint. His reason: While his colleagues received raises and special payments, he still received the same pay. That is discriminatory against a disabled person.

Due to inflation, he can afford less and less, the Briton justified his complaint. “The intention of the plan is to provide financial security to an employee who can no longer work – that will not work if the payments are fixed forever,” said De Telegraaf.

However, the judge dismissed the lawsuit. The court’s reasoning was that it was not discriminatory if non-working employees were not given a raise. (zis)
