The former president will not have to go to prison, because he will be able to serve his sentence under house arrest with an electronic bracelet

This Wednesday, the French court confirmed the sentence for three years in prison for former president Nicolas Sarkozy in the case of corruption and influence peddling as part of wiretapping, after the president will appeal the sentence in December.

The Paris Court of Appeal indicated that two of the three years of the sentence are suspended, while the former president will not have to go to prison, since he can serve the second year of the final sentence in house arrest and electronic bracelet, as gathered by FranceInfo. Sarkozy will also have his civil rights suspended for those three years, so he will not be able to run for elected office.

Likewise, his lawyer Thierry Herzog and former judge Gilbert Azibert were also sentenced to three years in prison, while Herzog will be banned from practicing his profession during that period. “Herzog and Sarkozy are lawyers, and Azibert is an expert in criminal procedures. “None of the three can claim to be unaware of the crimes committed,” said court president Sophie Clement.

Sarzoky was convicted in March 2021 of criminal offenses of corruption and influence peddling after the French judiciary found it proven that he used his position to try to obtain information about the investigation. The former president was accused by the prosecutor’s office of having access to secret information through Herzog in 2014, which is why he would then turn to Azibert, then the Court of Cassation.

The former president, who ruled France between 2007 and 2012, became the first former head of state to physically sit on the docksince although in 2011 his predecessor at the Élysée, Jacques Chirac, was sentenced to two years for crimes committed while he was mayor of Paris, he never came to court for health reasons.
