Four killed in attack on US consulate convoy

Four people were killed and three others kidnapped in an attack on a US convoy in southeastern Nigeria on Tuesday. “There were no US nationals in the convoy,” said Nigerian police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed in Washington that a multi-vehicle US convoy had been attacked. The US State Department also confirmed the attack.

According to Tochukwu, the gunmen killed two police officers and two US consulate employees before setting fire to their vehicle. They also kidnapped two police officers and a driver. The attack took place in Ogbaru district of Anambra state. A rescue and rescue operation took place on Tuesday evening.

Restless southeast of the country

Several separatist groups are active in southeastern Nigeria and have recently stepped up their attacks, mostly targeting police officers and government buildings. Authorities blame the attacks on the group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or its armed wing, ESN. The IPOB, which fights for an independent state for the Igbo ethnic group, denies the allegations.

In 1967, the unilateral declaration of an independent Republic of Biafra by renegade Igbo army officers sparked a 30-month civil war. More than a million people died as a result of the conflict and its aftermath, mostly Igbos. (SDA)
