$8 a cup – Russian cafe expands thanks to breast milk coffee

Business seems to be going well, the owner is already thinking about expanding his small cafe chain: Nine breastfeeding mothers are supplying fresh breast milk to the cafes in the Russian city of Perm in the Urals. Breast milk cappuccino is offered in the cafes, the Russian information channel Mash reported on Telegram on Tuesday.

So far there are only three cafes. According to owner Maxim Kobelev, about 50 cups of the special cappuccino are sold every day. In addition, the nine mothers deliver about five liters of breast milk every day. But the specialty coffee is apparently so popular that Kobelev wants to expand and is looking for new suppliers.

The unusual coffee is also lucrative. While a cappuccino of the same size in Russia usually costs just under two dollars (150 rubles), a cappuccino brewed with breast milk costs as much as eight dollars (650 rubles).

Baby well fed despite selling milk

The high price is justified, says café owner Kobelev. He insists that the mothers in labor provide all necessary medical documentation that they are healthy. That’s not free.

For a “portion” of breast milk, he pays the nursing woman 1,000 rubles, the equivalent of $ 12. By Russian standards, a handsome daily income. A young woman says she has enough breast milk and her baby is well fed despite giving birth in the café.

Kobelev came up with the idea together with his wife, who recently gave birth. In gastronomy, he laughs, not all ideas are exhausted yet. Now he’s looking for more locations for his cafes – and for more breastfeeding moms. The goal is to sell 1,000 cups of the specialty drink each day by the end of the year. (kes)
