With its 8987 km², Yellowstone National Park is one of the largest natural parks in the world. In addition to the volcano, which is located in the park, the geyser “Morning Glory Pool” also attracts tourists. The blue color of the geyser made it one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the area. But now the hot spring loses its famous color.
According to the park’s official website, visitors are to blame. Garbage and lucky coins thrown into the geyser would have clogged air shafts that lie under water. And that’s a problem, because the shafts would expel hot air and heat up the water.
Normally, the temperature of the “Morning Glory Pool” averages 70.7 degrees. Bacteria could form at these heat levels, which gave the geyser its blue color.
But the clogged water cooled it – and it became too cold for the bacteria. As a result, other germs have formed in the cooler environment, so that the water now turns more and more orange.
The park has known for over 70 years that tourist waste is a problem. Despite the now-noticeable effects the dirt has on wildlife, many visitors still throw their trash into the fountain, the park said.
