Prigozhin reportedly wants to reveal Russian positions to Ukraine

Amid his feud with Putin, Wagner leader Prigozhin has apparently given the Ukrainians the locations of Russian troops to negotiate safe passage for his own warriors. This is according to leaked documents.

The resentful back and forth between Moscow and Yevgeny Prigozhin, 61, the head of the Wagner mercenary group, apparently escalated months ago. As the Washington Post reveals, the Pentagon leaks also include a briefing about a January meeting between Prigozhin and unnamed Ukrainian military leaders, to whom the Wagner boss made a desperate offer.

Unfair offers from Prigozhin?

In exchange for a withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Bahhmut front, where the Wagner mercenaries suffered heavy casualties, Prigozhin apparently wanted to give up the positions of Russian troops. This because of a lack of support and care for his men from Moscow.

Accordingly, Prigozhin has repeatedly spoken with Ukrainian intelligence officers and made the said offer more than once. The leadership in Kiev apparently disagrees with Prigozhin’s proposals.

The documents do not reveal which Russian troop positions Prigozhin intended to betray. It remains unclear whether the killing of several senior Russian military commanders in Bakhmut in recent weeks is related to Prigozhin’s offer.

Break between Wagner and the Kremlin

Prigozhin accuses war president Vladimir Putin (70) and his defense minister Sergei Shoigu (67) of not supplying his troops with enough ammunition. In early May, he threatened to withdraw his warriors from the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, the scene of one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Russian invasion.

On Friday, Prigozhin again scoffed at Shoigu’s ministry’s assurances that Russian troops had regrouped to take up better positions. In fact, the Russians fled, Prigozhin sneered: “Our flanks are crumbling.” (kes)
