Voting in Turkey’s parliamentary and presidential elections has ended. Polling stations across the country closed at 4pm CEST on Sunday. The result is expected later in the evening. In total, about 64 million people at home and abroad were called upon to elect the president and a new parliament.
In the presidential elections, a battle ensues between incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan (69) and opposition leader Kemal Kilicdarolgu (74). It is not yet clear who will get the majority in parliament with 600 MPs.
If none of the candidates receive more than 50 percent of the vote, the two strongest candidates will go to a second round in two weeks. According to polls, only a low single digit result is predicted for the candidate of an ultra-nationalist party alliance, Sinan Ogan (55).
Although he has withdrawn his candidacy, Muharrem Ince (59) of the Fatherland Party is also pictured on the ballots. If voters put their stamp under him, the votes will still be counted, according to the electoral authority. In only announced his withdrawal after the earlier vote by Turks abroad. These votes must also be valid. Ince had barely had calculated chances. His withdrawal has made a first-round decision between favorites Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu more likely. (SDA)
