Tesla must update software on 1.1 million cars in China

The electric car manufacturer Tesla must address a possible safety risk in just over 1.1 million vehicles in China with a software update. The state market regulation agency spoke of a product recall that will begin on May 29.

A total of three imported and two Chinese-made Tesla models produced from January 2019 to April 2023 have been affected. According to the Chinese authorities, the problem is a brake defect that Tesla will fix with a software update. Experts assume that the software is updated via a mobile phone connection and that the vehicles do not have to be taken to a workshop for this.

In November, two people were killed in an accident in southern China’s Guangdong province after a Tesla Model Y drove into a crowd at high speed. Chinese state media speculated that the vehicle’s brakes may have been faulty.

The People’s Republic of China is Tesla’s most important market after the United States. In 2019, the American company opened its first international production facility with the “Gigafactory 3” in Shanghai. (sda/dpa)
