Shortly before the presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey, the risk of attacks seems to be increasing. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s challenger, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, wore a bulletproof vest during campaign appearances on Friday. In addition, bodyguards armed with assault rifles accompanied the head of the opposition CHP to the speaker’s tribune, which has not been the case so far. A senior CHP official said security measures were tightened after information was received that the leading candidate could be attacked. He did not give further details.
Kılıçdaroğlu, who leads a six-party electoral alliance, is more likely to replace Erdogan, who has been in power for 20 years, on Sunday, according to the latest polls.
Tensions also rose on Friday over a manipulated video suggesting that Kılıçdaroğlu had ties to the commander of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party PKK, Murat Karayılan. Referring to the video, Erdoğan told the students in a program broadcast on Thursday evening: “Kemal Kilicdaroglu has the man at the head of the terror group behind him.”
