Lori Vallow, 49, was on trial Friday in the northwestern state of Idaho for the deaths of her 16-year-old daughter and seven-year-old adopted son. Vallow reportedly called herself a goddess charged with preparing mankind for Judgment Day.

She has now been found guilty of murdering her two children and conspiring to kill her husband’s ex-wife.

She faces life imprisonment

Vallow faces life in prison with no chance of parole. Her fifth husband, Chad Daybell, who has self-published several end-of-time novels, will also soon face similar charges, including the murder of his first wife, Tammy.

The couple’s “religious beliefs” played a role in the murders, according to prosecutors. The story was filmed by Netflix in the three-part true crime documentary The Crimes of Our Mother.

Several people in the area died

The case first made headlines in the United States in late 2019 after the children disappeared. The boy’s grandparents reported the missing children to authorities.

The police investigation became increasingly macabre when it emerged that several people associated with Vallow and Daybell had died. Vallow was arrested months later in Hawaii.

Vallow’s third husband, Joseph Ryan – father of the daughter – died of a heart attack in 2018. While separating from her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, he was shot in July 2019 by her late brother – allegedly in self-defense.

They never reported the missing children

In October 2019, Daybell’s wife, Tammy, reportedly died of natural causes. A few weeks later, Vallow and Daybell moved to Hawaii, where they got married.

Vallow and Daybell never reported their two children missing. In June 2020, the two bodies were found on a Daybell property in Idaho.

A date for Vallow’s verdict has not yet been set. The judge ruled out the death penalty in her case. This does not apply to Daybell, who pleaded not guilty to all charges.

She became more and more radical

Vallow, who was raised in the Mormon faith, became increasingly radical in her religious beliefs and eventually believed she could communicate with angels. In 2018, she met Daybell, the leader of a radical Mormon sect preparing for Judgment Day, at a convention in Utah.

According to the public prosecutor, financial motives also played a role in the murders. Vallow is charged with grand larceny because she was receiving Social Security benefits for her children who had already died. Daybell is accused of insurance fraud.
