After two massacres last week, tens of thousands of people demonstrated against violence in Belgrade on Friday night. The participants of the rally gathered in front of the parliament in the Serbian capital and made their way to the suburb of New Belgrade via the city highway, the media reported. Among other things, they called for the closure of private television stations that condoned violence and mafia crime and made propaganda for the government of President Aleksandar Vucic (53).
Liberal and left-wing opposition parties and citizens’ movements called for protest. The triggers were two acts of violence that are not directly related. Last Wednesday, a 13-year-old student shot and killed eight classmates and a security guard at a Belgrade school. A day later, a 21-year-old shot at people in a village near Belgrade, killing eight of them.
In the run-up to the demonstration, the police had stated that it would be against the law to block the highway in Belgrade. However, she did not intervene when the demonstration brought traffic to a halt. The demonstration was peaceful. (SDA)
