Imran Khan: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Temporarily Released

Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Friday ruled on the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan for 15 days. Lawyer Salman Safdar told local TV channels after a hearing at the courthouse.

Only Thursday the higher Supreme Court declared the detention of the politician unlawful. Along the way, Khan called on his supporters in front of television cameras to end the violent protests.

The popular opposition leader was removed from a court in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Tuesday amid much interest. On Wednesday, he was charged with stealing state gifts. According to the Supreme Court decision, Khan should not be arrested until next Wednesday in connection with other charges.

After the former cricket star was jailed, violent clashes erupted between his supporters and security forces in several cities, leaving at least eight people dead and 300 injured, according to the Home Office. Schools and universities are closed until Monday. In addition, mobile internet was shut down indefinitely and access to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube was blocked.

In April 2022, Khan was ousted as Prime Minister by a vote of no confidence after nearly four years in office. Since then, the judiciary has brought new charges against him. He has to answer to the judge in about 100 cases. The allegations concern corruption, money laundering and insulting a judge. Observers see the actions against Khan as politically motivated.
