“In intensive talks until late Thursday evening”, the EVG would comply with the request made months ago to show the legal minimum wage, the railway said around midnight. “We have met the minimum wage requirement, now the EVG has its say,” says DB HR director Martin Seiler. “The EVG must now fulfill its promise and cancel the 50-hour warning strike.”
EVG negotiator Kristian Loroch told the German news agency DPA when asked that it was a “fake offer” from the railways. “Ultimately, after lengthy consultation, the employer put forward a solution option that we found negotiable. After we started discussing them, he backed off.”
After the warning strike was announced on Thursday, EVG asked DB to hold talks, as Loroch explained Friday night. According to the current status, the warning strike will take place. However, the union had given the railway an ultimatum to come to them “and think about it” during Friday.
The railway and transport union had called on workers on Thursday to strike, which would last from 10 p.m. Sunday to midnight on Tuesday. The railways decided a little later to completely stop long-distance traffic during this period. “Even at DB Regio, no train will run during the strike,” the state group said.
The minimum wage, which some 2,000 employees at DB receive only through benefits, has recently been the subject of particularly heated discussions. The EVG had already twice called for a strike in the ongoing collective bargaining dispute – these actions were also followed by the halting of long-distance traffic and an almost complete standstill in regional traffic.
The union represents workers from almost all sectors of the railways and has called for warning strikes from all occupational groups. Accordingly, the effects are immediately severe. For example, if the train controllers go on a warning strike, all traffic on certain routes will come to a standstill.
