Kemal Kilicdaroglu (74) is beside himself. The Turkish opposition leader went on Twitter two days before the presidential election. And in Russian! The reason: Russia would have interfered in the elections.

“Dear Russian friends, you are behind the montages, conspiracies, deepfake content and recordings discovered in this country yesterday,” he denounced the Kremlin. “If you want our friendship to continue beyond May 15, keep your hands off the Turkish state,” he threatens — and immediately reassures: “We are still for cooperation and friendship.”

Does Kilicdaroglu tackle fake PKK video?

His statements could be related to a fake video that incumbent Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (69) showed last week during an election campaign.

In the video, opposition leader Kilicdaroglu is said to be saying, “Let’s go to the polls together.” After a few seconds, a cut is made to a person in a military uniform. The sequence still appears to be part of Kilicdaroglu’s campaign video. This is Murat Karayilan (68), co-founder and leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). This is a militant Kurdish organization that has been designated as a terrorist organization by the EU and the US.

Erdogan probably wanted to link his opponent to the PKK in order to harm him. But experts from “Deutsche Welle” have been able to confirm that the video of the election campaign has been manipulated. How Kilicdaroglu and his CHP party found out that Russia might be behind the counterfeits, and whether he actually addresses this incident, remains open for now.
