US scandal Congressman Santos indicted on 13 counts

US Congressman George Santos will have to answer for several crimes in court.

US scandal MP George Santos (34), who has been discredited by numerous lies about his resume, has been charged with 13 counts and arrested. The 34-year-old Republican faces charges of fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and false statements to the House of Representatives, the New York State Attorney’s Office said Wednesday. Santos was scheduled to appear before a federal judge in the afternoon (local time).

According to the prosecutor’s statement, Santos allegedly embezzled campaign donations for private expenses, among other things. He would also have illegally applied for and received unemployment benefits during the corona pandemic. The MP is also accused of making false statements about his income to the House of Representatives.

Outrageous misrepresentations

American media already reported on the charges on Tuesday. The costs were initially unknown.

Santos was first elected to the House of Representatives in Washington in November. As a result, new revelations kept coming about the politician’s sometimes outrageous misrepresentations, including about his university education, his career, his family and his religion.

So Santos sealed a degree from an elite university and falsely claimed to have worked for the investment bank Goldman Sachs and the banking group Citigroup. He also falsely claimed that his mother survived the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and also falsely identified as Jewish.

The Brazilian-born MP has admitted many of the lies, saying he had “beautified” his CV. Santos came under fire from within his own ranks, but refused to resign. In principle, it is not forbidden to lie to the public. But Santos’ financial behavior prompted the judiciary to act. (AFP/Baby)
