Former President of the United States Donald Trump was found guilty this Tuesday of of “sexual abuse” and defamationbut not rape, in the case arising from the writer’s complaints E. Jean Carroll, 79 years.
This is also indicated by the verdict that was handed down today in record time by the New York jury that considered his case.
This is the first time that Trump (76 years old and a candidate for a new term) has been sentenced since leaving the post of the country’s president, although last January his company, the Trump Organization, was ordered to pay 1.61 million dollars for tax evasion conspiracy.
Carroll accused Trump of raping her in the dressing room of a department store in NY in the mid-nineties, but also to denigrate her when she decided to make her complaint public in the book she published in 2019.
The judge warned that he would not allow shouting or applause during the sentencing, and prosecutor Carroll, who also attended this latest hearing, did not immediately react.
He also advised the jury that, while they were no longer bound to remain anonymous, they should refrain from revealing their role in the trial or providing information about its progress.
The jury had to decide whether Trump was liable (a term used in civil cases) for rape, sexual assault or groping, and the jury chose the other option, except to find him liable for defamation.
He also decided that Trump should reimburse Carroll a total of about 5 million dollars2 of which are for the “damage” that Trump caused in that sexual assault and 2.7 million regarding his reputation.
As this is a case proceeding through civil proceedings, there are no associated prison terms.
The judge immediately turned to the lawyers and asked them if they had anything to add, to which both teams, the defense and the prosecution, answered in the negative.
Writer Carroll, who attended all the trials with great integrity, left the room without making any statements to the many reporters who surrounded her as she left the court.
TRUMP SAYS THE VERDICT IS A “SHAME”
Shortly after the verdict was announced, Trump called her a “too bad” in your online account TruthSocial.
“I have no idea who this woman is. This verdict is a disgrace, a continuation of the biggest witch hunt of all time,” the businessman wrote in a short message written in all caps on his Truth Social social network minutes after the news broke.
Trump has always claimed that he does not know Carroll, and given that he was once photographed with her, he replied that at that time, at social events, he was associated with hundreds of people with whom he shook hands or kissed, and that he knew them.
He systematically accused Carroll of being a “liar” and even “mentally ill” and seeking nothing but fame and notoriety with his complaint, an idea his legal team made central to the two-week trial.
For its part, Trump’s campaign team also released its first reaction to the ruling.
“In jurisdictions that are fully under control Democratic Party, our nation’s justice system is being compromised by extremist left-wing politicians. We have allowed the false and completely fabricated claims of deranged people to interfere with our elections, doing enormous damage.”
Thus, the election team acknowledges that the verdict could have electoral effects for the presidential elections in 2024in which Trump starts as the favorite against the attempt to re-elect the current president Joe Biden.
