A swarm of bees has killed at least six people in a bus accident in Nicaragua. The bus fell off a slope where beehives had been set up to produce honey on a coffee plantation in the northwestern Central American country’s San Sebastián de Yali municipality, local media reported Tuesday. At least 14 other people were treated in hospitals for bee stings, including a four-year-old child.
The fatalities were reported to be between the ages of 8 and 84. After Monday’s accident, local residents tried to help the 45 passengers on board, but the large number of African bees prevented rescue until emergency services arrived. Some of those affected had more than 300 bee stings, as reported by the television station TN8. (sda/dpa)
