Corruption allegations: Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan arrested

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been arrested on corruption charges.

The 70-year-old was arrested in the high court in the capital Islamabad on Tuesday, as confirmed by security authorities and his PTI party. The background is one of many corruption cases for which Khan has to answer, according to a security official for the German news agency. Clashes broke out in front of the courthouse between supporters of the politician and the police.

In April 2022, Khan was ousted as Prime Minister by a vote of no confidence after nearly four years in office. Since then, the judiciary has brought new charges against Khan.

Imran Khan has repeatedly called for mass protests and new elections in recent months. An attempt to arrest the politician in March this year at his residence in the city of Lahore sparked violent clashes between police and his supporters. (sda/dpa)
