They have long-range “wings” – and could force Ukraine to rewrite plans for an upcoming counter-offensive: Russia increasingly relies on so-called glide bombs. This is reported by the British Telegraph.
For Ukraine, these bombs posed a “very serious threat,” Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Colonel Yuriy Ihnat told the newspaper. According to him, Russia has been intensively using slide bombs for about a month. According to Ukrainian information, there should be about 20 per day.
Unlike simple bombs, these types of bombs can slide, allowing them to hit targets far away from where they were dropped. An important advantage for Russia, because the fighter jets that drop the bombs do not have to get too close to the front line – and therefore beyond the range of most Ukrainian air defense systems.
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) sees this as a possible new tactic by Russia. The Russian calculation: the risk of further aircraft losses must be reduced, the ISW writes in a report at the beginning of April.
Colonel Ihnat had already warned in early May that Ukraine’s air defense against the bombs was “inefficient”. “We can’t counter this kind of munitions,” he told Military Watch Magazine. The bombs can fly up to 70 kilometers and target critical infrastructure, kindergartens, residential areas and educational and medical facilities, he added.
Experts assume that Russia currently has two different types of such bombs. A more modern, satellite-controlled UPAB-1500B is rarely used due to its high production costs, Deutsche Welle reports. Instead, according to the broadcaster’s information, Russia still relies primarily on originally Soviet-era unguided bombs. According to the information, these will be upgraded by being equipped with wings and satellite control.
According to the “Telegraph,” Ukrainian and Western experts have raised suspicions that Russia’s use of slide bombs could force Kiev to change its deployment plan for its upcoming spring offensive.
