‘Losing Crimea would be the death knell for Putin’

Putin presents himself as a brilliant strategist.

In the past, experts considered it unlikely that Ukraine would recapture Crimea. After all, Russia has had plenty of time to upgrade the island since its annexation in 2014. But now attacks on military targets in Crimea are on the rise. Would Ukraine also want to recapture the peninsula in its major offensive? If that actually happens, then Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) will lose the support of the population, Kremlin expert Abbas Galljamov (50) is sure.

Galliamov himself worked for a long time in the Kremlin and wrote the speeches for the president. Today he knows what weaknesses Putin has. One of them is Crimea. “The loss of Crimea would be the death knell for Putin,” Gallyamov said in an interview with the Ukrainian channel “24 Kanal”.

Putin himself has made something sacred of Crimea,” said the political scientist. “From a Russian perspective, Crimea is the cradle of Russian Orthodoxy and therefore of Russian culture,” Eastern Europe expert Ulrich Schmid (56) told Blick in December. Galljamov knows that if Putin loses Crimea, he will also lose credibility in his country. And that will have consequences for the 2024 elections.

Putin loses face with Crimea

Galliamov is sure: “The disappointment will be so great that there will be no reason to vote for him. There will be no clearer proof of Putin’s defeat than the loss of Crimea.” The number of attacks on targets in Sevastopol and other Crimean cities is on the rise – and that is also worrying the population. There would be nothing left of the “brilliant strategist” as Putin likes to present himself. Why would you choose him then?

Russia has repeatedly rigged elections in the past. But according to Galliamov, too obvious a manipulation would lead to Putin’s downfall. (jwg)
