US intelligence leak: messages from suspect provide insight

In the case of the recently discovered data breach of US intelligence documents, the exact motive of the suspect is still unclear, despite the inspection of thousands of his internet messages. The “New York Times” reported on Saturday, citing several thousand messages Jack Teixeira posted in an Internet chat room, that many questions about the young man’s motives remained unanswered.

However, the news offers insight into the mindset of the soldier. “He seems to have seen himself in some ways as the author of an insider newsletter designed to inform his online friends – rather than a whistleblower planning a major leak of government secrets,” the paper wrote.

According to the paper’s investigation, Teixeira spread various conspiracy theories, claiming, for example, that US authorities were involved in staging disasters to influence the debate over gun laws.

Photos and messages from the chat room once again prove the love of guns that has already been passed on to the early 20-year-old. Among other things, he published photos of his weapons and reflected on major shootings in the country. “I think it’s cool to analyze murders. And it’s fun,” the paper quoted one of its posts as saying.

Teixeira is suspected of having published highly confidential documents from the US secret services and the Department of Defense in a private chat room. From there, they would have continued to spread until authorities and the media became aware of them. The classified information contained, for example, information about the Russian offensive war against Ukraine, but also details about alleged US espionage operations against partners.

In mid-April, the FBI arrested Teixeira. The National Guard’s IT specialist is charged with the unauthorized deletion, storage and transmission of classified and national defense information. (sda/dpa)
