A man from Lviv has earned 3 million euros (about 3 million francs) from the sale of luxury cars. The special thing about this message: the man is Ukrainian, his clients were wealthy Russians.
Moscow has been at war with Ukraine for 14 months. The car salesman did not care that his country was bombed and his compatriots died.
As Ukraine’s domestic intelligence agency revealed on Friday, the buyers included top executives from the Kremlin company Gazprom and the propaganda channel RT. The Ukrainian sold a total of 45 luxury cars.
The man bought the high-quality vehicles from Ukrainian car dealers. With some forged documents, he then sent the cars to Belarus via the EU. From there they entered the empire of Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin (70).
Western luxury cars are now in short supply due to the sanctions – the Ukrainian’s business has been correspondingly good.
The authorities now reacted and confiscated the man’s extensive possessions. He owned 22 apartments in Kiev and Lviv, 36 plots of land and 40 luxury cars. Among other things, two Rolls-Royce Cullinans, each with a value of at least 440,000 francs, a Mercedes-AMG G 63 (from around 140,000 francs) and an Audi RS Q8 with a value of at least 130,000 francs were seized.
Particularly brutal: the car salesman had applied for a tax refund for his company from the Ukrainian authorities. He now faces a 12-year prison sentence for “supporting the aggressor state”.
Another person targeted by Ukrainian authorities on Thursday was expatriate billionaire Vadim Novinsky. The SBU confiscated parts of his assets worth 250 million francs. The Ukrainian government had already imposed sanctions on him in December. In April he suddenly appeared in Zurich at church services. Nowinski has sympathy for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The religious community is suspected of collaborating with Russia.
