American author Jean Carroll (79) accuses Donald Trump (76) of raping her in the mid-1990s. He dismisses the accusation – partly because Carroll is “not his type”.
An interrogation video related to the Trump trial has now become public. In the usual way, Trump dodges the questions of lawyer Roberta Kaplan. And he defends his claim that Carroll is not his first choice.
Trump says almost apologetically to Kaplan, “You honestly wouldn’t be my choice either. I hope you’re not offended. I wouldn’t be interested in you at all.”
Trump, however, is in trouble when he has to identify himself and prosecutor Jean Carroll in a photo – and promptly mistakes her for his ex-wife Marla Maples. This happens to him twice, undermining his claim that she is not “his type”.
The ex-president is also asked about the famous “Access Hollywood” video, which was shot on the sidelines of a TV show in 2005 and caused a stir in the run-up to his presidency. In it, Trump brags that because he’s a star, he can touch women’s genitals.
He was also questioned by Kaplan about this, and again he defended himself in an uncharacteristic way: “If you look at the past million years, that’s probably mostly true, not always, but mostly true. Unfortunately – or fortunately.”
Carroll accuses Trump of raping her in a New York City department store in the mid-1990s. Trump, who was not yet a politician but a real estate entrepreneur, always dismissed the accusations. The criminal charges are time-barred, but under civil law, Carroll was free to sue. She demands compensation.
Oral arguments in the case are expected next week. In the video now released, Trump also describes Kaplan as “a political operative” and “a disgrace.” As for Carroll, he said he didn’t know her and didn’t know anything about “this crazy person”. (new)
