Civil society: more than 160 dead after floods in eastern Congo

According to a civil society organization, at least 164 people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo after severe flooding and landslides.

This was announced by the chairman of civil society of the South Kivu region, Adrien Zawadi, from the German news agency on Friday. However, the number of deaths is likely to rise further as the search for missing and buried persons is still ongoing. State authorities did not initially confirm the number of casualties on Friday afternoon.

Flooding in the South Kivu region is not uncommon, especially during the two rainy seasons of the year. The current rainy season lasts until May.

In the neighboring countries of Rwanda and Uganda there have recently been major floods with fatal consequences. At least 127 people have died in Rwanda and at least 6 people in Uganda. (sda/dpa)
